We Could Name Our Wall “Spot”
“Ok, that’s kind of funny,” Daniel chuckles.
Ashley’s smile from her joke fades as she continues looking at their walls. “But really, there are a lot of spots and marks on our walls. We need to learn how to clean wall paint safely, ASAP.”
Daniel nods in agreement. “True, our walls could use some attention. I’d assume water and a sponge can clean it all up.” Ashley shakes her head quickly. “No, I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure the process changes depending on the type of paint on the wall.”
Daniel’s eyebrows lift in surprise. “I had no idea! Let’s definitely look up the right process then, like when we were looking up how to fix water-damaged wall paint,” he says, getting out his phone. He starts searching on Google.
Here’s what he finds and shows Ashley:
How To Clean 3 Different Paints On Walls
You clean latex paint with warm water and a non-abrasive cleaner. Clean oil-based paint walls with warm water, liquid detergent, and white vinegar. You clean walls that have a flat finish with warm water and maybe some white vinegar. Always scrub gently and don’t use products with ammonia.
Working in small sections can keep streak marks from showing up.
Cleaning Latex-Based Painted Walls
You’ll need warm water, a non-abrasive all-purpose cleaner, two buckets, two sponges, and two towels.
- Mix warm water and cleaner in the bucket according to the directions
- Fill the other bucket with water
- Use a damp sponge to gently wash painted walls using the mixture
- Do the same with the normal water
- Dry your walls
If this doesn’t work, try mixing a paste of baking soda and water. Rub it on the stain with a non-abrasive pad, rinse with water and sponge, then dry.
For tough stains follow this recipe: 1 cup of ammonia, half a cup vinegar, a quarter cup baking soda, and 1 gallon of water. Make sure it won’t damage the walls by testing it in an out-of-the-way spot first.
How To Clean Oil-Based Wall Paint
You’ll need 1 teaspoon of liquid detergent, a quarter teaspoon of white vinegar, one quart of warm water, two sponges, two buckets, and some towels.
- Mix the detergent, vinegar, and warm water in one bucket
- Fill the other bucket with water
- Use a sponge dampened with the mixture to gently scrub the painted walls
- Use the sponge dampened with the normal water
- Dry your painted walls with a towel
Cleaning Walls With Flat (Matte) Finishes
Flat, or matte, finishes are the most delicate of the types of paint finishes.
Start with lightly washing your walls with a damp cloth, just water. If you need a little more oomph, use a mixture of water and white vinegar. Scrub gently! You can also use a store-bought foam cleanser for stubborn stains.
It’s best to test it in an area that’s hard to see.
